Compact Primary or Backup Flight Instrument with Optional Autopilot Capability
The Garmin G5 is a compact electronic flight instrument designed specifically for experimental amateur-built (EAB) and light sport aircraft (LSA). Developed by Garmin’s dedicated Team X engineering group, it combines essential flight information into a bright, easy-to-read display that fits a standard 3-1/8” instrument cutout.
Suitable for use as a primary EFIS attitude indicator, DG/HSI display or fully integrated backup instrument, the G5 provides a flexible solution for standalone installations as well as G3X™, G3X Touch™ and other compatible Experimental/LSA glass cockpits.
Key Features
- Bright, sunlight-readable 3.5” LCD colour display
- Fits a standard 3-1/8” instrument cutout
- Can be used as a primary EFIS attitude indicator or DG/HSI display
- Suitable as a fully integrated backup flight instrument for G3X™, G3X Touch™ and other Experimental/LSA glass cockpits
- Provides standalone or backup autopilot control
- Supports coupled GPS approaches, including continued autopilot operation in the event of a primary display loss
- Optional backup battery provides up to 4 hours of emergency operation following aircraft power loss
- Dual G5 installations provide reversionary display capability, dual ADAHRS redundancy and the option of dual backup batteries
A Compact, Integrated Flight Display
The G5 brings together flight information that would traditionally require multiple individual instruments. Its crisp 3.5” LCD is designed for excellent readability in sunlight while occupying only a fraction of the panel space and weight required by conventional gyro-based instruments.
Two pilot-selectable main display formats are available: a PFD page and a DG (directional gyro) or HSI (horizontal situation indicator) page.
VHF or GPS navigation inputs are required to drive the HSI display. When interfacing with GPS, an optional GAD™ 29 navigation data adapter is required.
By consolidating important visual cues and flight data onto a single display, the G5 makes information easier to scan and allows pilots to respond quickly and intuitively during flight.
Rock-Solid Attitude Reference
When configured as a primary attitude indicator, the G5 uses solid-state AHRS reference to provide smooth, stable and reliable pitch and roll information.
In addition to aircraft attitude, the display supports:
- Airspeed
- Altitude
- Vertical speed
- Slip/skid
- Turn rate
- Configurable V-speed references
- Barometric pressure setting
- Selected altitude
- Visual alerts when reaching a preselected altitude
A built-in GPS receiver and antenna provides accurate groundspeed and ground track information, with an external GPS antenna connection also available.
A dedicated rotary knob makes it easy to adjust altitude bugs and barometric pressure settings directly from the instrument.
Clear Directional and Navigation Information
The G5 can also operate as a DG or HSI, providing additional situational awareness within the panel.
When paired with an affordable GMU 11 magnetometer and select VHF Nav/Comms or GPS navigators, the G5 can provide primary reference information for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and GPS course guidance. GPS navigator integration requires the optional GAD 29 navigation data adapter.
The display can also provide distance and groundspeed information, along with both vertical and lateral GPS/VOR/LOC course deviation when available. Additional equipment may be required depending on the installation.
The G5’s rotary knob can be used to make and adjust course selections or control heading bug settings in DG installations.
Because the GMU 11 connects through the CAN bus network, a single magnetometer can provide heading information to two G5 units simultaneously.
Dual G5 Installation for Added Redundancy
Installing two G5 displays provides dedicated instruments for attitude reference and DG/HSI guidance while also adding another level of system redundancy.
A dual installation provides dual ADAHRS and reversionary display capability. If the primary attitude indicator were to fail, the secondary G5 can revert to displaying attitude information consolidated with heading indication.
Each G5 is also available with an optional lithium-ion backup battery. This can provide up to 4 hours of emergency operation following an aircraft electrical outage or shutdown.
For further backup capability, one of Garmin’s aera® series aviation portable GPS units¹ can also be used to provide battery-powered moving map navigation guidance alongside the G5 flight display.
An Ideal Backup for G3X and G3X Touch
When installed as a backup instrument for a G3X, G3X Touch or another compatible glass display system, the G5 provides a comprehensive range of supplemental EFIS capabilities.
If required, it can maintain the majority of flight display and autopilot control functions, including the ability to fly coupled GPS approaches.
The G5 can also provide backup ADAHRS reference to the primary displays, giving the aircraft additional options for maintaining critical flight information and control functions in the event of a primary display or system shutdown.
Standalone Flight Instrument with Autopilot
The G5 may be installed as part of a GFC™ 500X system with a GMC 305 or GMC 507 autopilot control panel and up to three GSA 28 smart servos, allowing it to operate as a standalone flight instrument with integrated autopilot functionality.
GTN™ Xi series navigators² or a compatible Garmin portable GPS, including the aera 660, aera 795 or aera 796, can be connected to the G5’s serial port.
This allows the autopilot to couple laterally to the flight plan and vertically to support VNAV descents to pattern altitude.
Additional lateral and vertical autopilot modes available through the GMC 305 or GMC 507 include:
- Heading
- Pitch
- Roll
- Altitude hold
- Vertical speed hold
- Airspeed hold
The control panel’s level (LVL) mode is also supported. At the press of a button, LVL mode can engage the autopilot and command the aircraft back to level flight.
Garmin G5 at a Glance
The Garmin G5 provides a compact and versatile way to add a primary flight display, DG/HSI, backup instrumentation or integrated autopilot capability to an Experimental or LSA panel. With its sunlight-readable display, solid-state attitude reference, navigation integration, optional battery backup and support for dual-unit installations, it provides useful capability without taking up unnecessary panel space.
